Some were played by Jewish prisoners in concentration camps; others belonged to the Klezmer musical culture\, which was all but destroyed by the Nazis.  \nFollowing the screening\, Violins of Hope co-founder Avshalom Weinstein will speak about his family’s work restoring the instruments.  \n The evening concludes with San Francisco Symphony chamber musicians performing works by Holocaust composers. \nSan Mateo Public Library will show four films in February on successive Tuesdays related to musicians during the Holocaust\, on February 4\, 11\, 18\, and 25\, 2020. Films begin shortly after 6 p.m. in the Oak Room.

DESCRIPTION:We deeply regret to announce that the 18th Annual Day of Learning has been cancelled. The San Francisco Department of Public Health has released a statement strongly advising that all public meetings and community events be immediately cancelled. In accordance with this advice\, the 18th Annual Day of Learning on Sunday\, March 8th at Galileo High School in San Francisco has been cancelled. The JFCS Holocaust Center plans to reschedule the Day of Learning before the end of the academic year if at all feasible. This website will be updated accordingly.\nStay safe and make sure to comply with the important health precautions issued by the Departments of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control.\nThank you. \n_____________________________________________________________________ \nStudents in grades 7 – 12 and teachers from all public and private schools throughout California are invited to JFCS Holocaust Center’s Day of Learning to gain a deeper understanding of the Holocaust and patterns of genocide in order to inspire moral courage and social responsibility in the future. \nThe many workshops include eyewitness testimonies from survivors of the Holocaust or genocide. The Day of Learning program is free and a light lunch is provided. \nThis educational conference is specifically for students and active classroom teachers. From their amazing stories and Weinstein’s mission to collect and restore the instruments comes the inspiration for this one-hour documentary. \nFollowing the film\, Berkeley Klezmer violinist Cookie Segestein will play some of the actual violins which are touring the West Coast from January until March 2020. She will talk about the history of Eastern European music prior to the Holocaust and tell stories about the violins and her family. Cookie’s mother is an Auschwitz survivor.
