DESCRIPTION:Daniel Hawkins\, RR\, 2009 will be included in the exhibit A Journey of Healing\, Hope and Humanity\nIn RR\, 2009 an 8-foot segment of railroad track – including gravel\, railroad ties\, and steel rails – is set between two vertical panes of two-way mirrored plexiglas.\nRR is the embodiment of paradoxical emotions\, narratives\, and ways of perceiving the world — and this contradiction opens a space where we can reflect on how we got here\, where we’re headed\, and what illusions and promises we may be riding at this very moment. \nLos Angeles based artist Daniel Hawkins frequently combines the deliberate undertaking of Sisyphean tasks with explorations of the aesthetics of plausible deniability.\nExhibition:\nViolins of Hope\, A Journey of Heroism\, Healing and Humanity \nNOW – MARCH 13th \nTUESDAYS – SATURDAYS\, 1-5pm \nAn exhibition featuring the Violins of Hope will be open (and free) to the public at the Veterans Gallery at the Veterans Building in San Francisco. The violins share the stories of Jewish resistance fighters and tales of loss and reunification following the war. \nThe exhibition will showcase a selection of approximately 20 violins from the collection of over 70 that were played by Jewish musicians during the Holocaust. Amnon Weinstein began collecting and restoring the violins more than 20 years ago\, and the collection is dedicated to the 400 family members he lost in World War II. Since then\, the instruments have been played by prominent musicians in venues worldwide\, giving voice not only to the owners of the violins\, but also to the millions of Jewish people who perished.  \nThe Violins of Hope exhibition will offer a unique educational opportunity through the Violins of Hope APP which will provide supplemental material and allow the visitor to engage in an intimate musical experience. Some were played by Jewish prisoners in concentration camps; others belonged to the Klezmer musical culture\, which was all but destroyed by the Nazis. From their amazing stories and Weinstein’s mission to collect and restore the instruments comes the inspiration for this one-hour documentary. \nFollowing the film\, Berkeley Klezmer violinist Cookie Segestein will play some of the actual violins which are touring the West Coast from January until March 2020. She will talk about the history of Eastern European music prior to the Holocaust and tell stories about the violins and her family. Cookie’s mother is an Auschwitz survivor. The San Francisco Department of Public Health has released a statement strongly advising that all public meetings and community events be immediately cancelled. In accordance with this advice\, the 18th Annual Day of Learning on Sunday\, March 8th at Galileo High School in San Francisco has been cancelled. The JFCS Holocaust Center plans to reschedule the Day of Learning before the end of the academic year if at all feasible. This website will be updated accordingly.\nStay safe and make sure to comply with the important health precautions issued by the Departments of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control.\nThank you. \n_____________________________________________________________________ \nStudents in grades 7 – 12 and teachers from all public and private schools throughout California are invited to JFCS Holocaust Center’s Day of Learning to gain a deeper understanding of the Holocaust and patterns of genocide in order to inspire moral courage and social responsibility in the future. \nThe many workshops include eyewitness testimonies from survivors of the Holocaust or genocide. SUMMARY:Music of Rememberance Concert
DESCRIPTION:“Wherever there were violins\, there was hope.” – Amnon Weinstein \n\nViolins of Hope is a unique project inspired by a private collection of violins\, violas and cellos lovingly restored over the past two decades by Israeli violin maker Amnon Weinstein. The instruments all belonged to Jews who played them before and during the Holocaust. Many were donated by or bought from survivors; some arrived through family members and many simply carry Stars of David as a decoration and an identity tag declaring: “We were played by proud people.” These precious instruments can now be heard again even though their former owners were silenced. \nMusic of Remembrance will bring a quartet of the Violins of Hope instruments to Seattle for a special narrated concert at Benaroya Hall on March 1\, featuring the core members of the Music of Remembrance ensemble\, all members of the Seattle Symphony. These artists will be performing on the Holocaust-era Violins of Hope instruments in a program of music by composers lost to the Holocaust. The Violins of Hope visit in 2020 will mark an important milestone\, 75 years after the defeat of the Third Reich. SUMMARY:Along the Trade Route Concert at the JCC East Bay
DESCRIPTION:Along the Trade Route concert with violinists Cookie Segelstein (Klezmer)\, Emmanuel During (Turkish)\, Hemmige V. Srivatsan (South Indian) and Darcy Noonan (Celtic). \nMusicians have been sharing melodies for centuries\, with no regard to political and national boundaries. Irish sailors brought melodies to sea ports in Ukraine; Turks\, Roma and Jews shared common songs\, and Roma music has origins in India. In Trade Routes\, we present these internationally renowned Bay Area musicians steeped in seemingly separate cultural musical traditions with an exciting and surprising common vision of musical sharing. Each violinist will be performing on a violin once owned and played by a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp\, now repaired and repurposed as an instrument of peace\, social justice and hope. \nSOLD OUT

Therefore we will be performing a piece by lesbian composer Ethel Smyth\, Boatswain’s Mate Overture\, as well as Mendelssohn’s “Scottish” Symphony. We will not forget the tragic devastating loss of these precious lives\, but we will lift them up and celebrate their lives thru music! This event will raise awareness in our community\, of a tragedy that is fading in their minds and hearts. DESCRIPTION:Defiant Requiem (2012). One hour\, 25 minutes. Doug Schultz\, director. A memorial concert reawakens the story of an artistic uprising in the Nazi concentration camp\, Terezin\, where a chorus of 150 inmates confronts the Nazis face-to-face – and sings to them what they dare not say. \nSan Mateo Public Library will show four films in February on successive Tuesdays related to musicians during the Holocaust\, on February 4\, 11\, 18\, and 25\, 2020. Films begin shortly after 6 p.m. in the Oak Room.

DESCRIPTION:Daniel Hawkins\, RR\, 2009 will be included in the exhibit A Journey of Healing\, Hope and Humanity\nIn RR\, 2009 an 8-foot segment of railroad track – including gravel\, railroad ties\, and steel rails – is set between two vertical panes of two-way mirrored plexiglas.\nRR is the embodiment of paradoxical emotions\, narratives\, and ways of perceiving the world — and this contradiction opens a space where we can reflect on how we got here\, where we’re headed\, and what illusions and promises we may be riding at this very moment. \nLos Angeles based artist Daniel Hawkins frequently combines the deliberate undertaking of Sisyphean tasks with explorations of the aesthetics of plausible deniability.\nExhibition:\nViolins of Hope\, A Journey of Heroism\, Healing and Humanity \nNOW – MARCH 13th \nTUESDAYS – SATURDAYS\, 1-5pm \nAn exhibition featuring the Violins of Hope will be open (and free) to the public at the Veterans Gallery at the Veterans Building in San Francisco. The violins share the stories of Jewish resistance fighters and tales of loss and reunification following the war. \nThe exhibition will showcase a selection of approximately 20 violins from the collection of over 70 that were played by Jewish musicians during the Holocaust. Amnon Weinstein began collecting and restoring the violins more than 20 years ago\, and the collection is dedicated to the 400 family members he lost in World War II. Since then\, the instruments have been played by prominent musicians in venues worldwide\, giving voice not only to the owners of the violins\, but also to the millions of Jewish people who perished.  \nThe Violins of Hope exhibition will offer a unique educational opportunity through the Violins of Hope APP which will provide supplemental material and allow the visitor to engage in an intimate musical experience.
