SUMMARY:Music of Rememberance Concert
DESCRIPTION:“Wherever there were violins\, there was hope.” – Amnon Weinstein \n\nViolins of Hope is a unique project inspired by a private collection of violins\, violas and cellos lovingly restored over the past two decades by Israeli violin maker Amnon Weinstein. The instruments all belonged to Jews who played them before and during the Holocaust. Many were donated by or bought from survivors; some arrived through family members and many simply carry Stars of David as a decoration and an identity tag declaring: “We were played by proud people.” These precious instruments can now be heard again even though their former owners were silenced. \nMusic of Remembrance will bring a quartet of the Violins of Hope instruments to Seattle for a special narrated concert at Benaroya Hall on March 1\, featuring the core members of the Music of Remembrance ensemble\, all members of the Seattle Symphony. These artists will be performing on the Holocaust-era Violins of Hope instruments in a program of music by composers lost to the Holocaust. The Violins of Hope visit in 2020 will mark an important milestone\, 75 years after the defeat of the Third Reich. Even as the number of living survivors continues to dwindle\, Violins of Hope helps to keep stories and memories alive. \nProgram \nMiecysclaw Weinberg Aria\, op. 9 (1942) \nMikhail Shmidt and Natasha Bazhanov\, violins; Susan Gulkis Assadi\, viola; Walter Gray\, cello \nHans Krása Dance (Terezin\, 1943) \nMikhail Shmidt\, violin; Susan Gulkis Assadi\, viola; Walter Gray\, cello \nDavid Beigelman Dybbuk Dances (Lodz Ghetto\, 1941) \nNatasha Bazhanov and Artur Girsky\, violins \nErwin Schulhoff Five Pieces for String Quartet (1923) \nMikhail Shmidt and Natasha Bazhanov\, violins; Susan Gulkis Assadi\, viola; Walter Gray\, cello \nGideon Klein String Trio (Terezin\, 1944) \nMikhail Shmidt\, violin; Susan Gulkis Assadi\, viola; Walter Gray\, cello \nBetty Olivero “Zeks Yiddishe Lider un Tantz” from The Golem (1997) \nLaura DeLuca\, clarinet soloist \n Mikhail Shmidt and Artur Girsky\, violins; Susan Gulkis Assadi\, viola; Walter Gray\, cello \nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:Along the Trade Route Concert at the JCC East Bay
DESCRIPTION:Along the Trade Route concert with violinists Cookie Segelstein (Klezmer)\, Emmanuel During (Turkish)\, Hemmige V. Srivatsan (South Indian) and Darcy Noonan (Celtic). \nMusicians have been sharing melodies for centuries\, with no regard to political and national boundaries. Irish sailors brought melodies to sea ports in Ukraine; Turks\, Roma and Jews shared common songs\, and Roma music has origins in India. In Trade Routes\, we present these internationally renowned Bay Area musicians steeped in seemingly separate cultural musical traditions with an exciting and surprising common vision of musical sharing. Each violinist will be performing on a violin once owned and played by a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp\, now repaired and repurposed as an instrument of peace\, social justice and hope. \nSOLD OUT

SUMMARY:Bay Area Rainbow Symphony\, Dawn Harms\, conductor
DESCRIPTION:BARS will be representing the many gays and lesbians who were killed alongside the 6 million Jews. \nThis is BARS big spring concert\, and we want to share the haunting sounds and stories\, by playing these instruments. We want to inspire our community and never forget the tragic loss of the many gay and lesbian people who perished alongside the 6 million Jews. Therefore we will be performing a piece by lesbian composer Ethel Smyth\, Boatswain’s Mate Overture\, as well as Mendelssohn’s “Scottish” Symphony. We will not forget the tragic devastating loss of these precious lives\, but we will lift them up and celebrate their lives thru music! This event will raise awareness in our community\, of a tragedy that is fading in their minds and hearts. We celebrate the joy of music and the joy the people once had\, when playing these instruments\, by performing Interplay for 3 Violins\, by Chris Brubeck. \nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:San Francisco Symphony Chamber Music Series at Davies Symphony Hall
DESCRIPTION:Experience a profound program that celebrates the power of the human spirit. Written while imprisoned in the Terezín concentration camp\, Hans Krása’s Tanz and Passacaglia and Fugue are each poignant sound worlds that gradually build to climactic heights of unbridled emotion. Gideon Klein—also imprisoned at Terezín—completed his String Trio just ten days before being deported to Auschwitz. Though each perished\, their beautiful music is now immortal testaments of their stories\, each defying its dark origins with an enduring message of hope and resilience. \nArnold: Suite Bourgeoise \nKlein: String Trio \nKrása: Passacaglia and Fugue \nKrása: Tanz \nBrahms: Trio for Horn\, Violin\, and Piano in E-flat major\, Opus 40 \nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:Violins of Hope Mahler's Symphony No. 4
DESCRIPTION:Violins of Hope instruments survive today to teach lessons of history\, heroism and hope.  These strings of the Holocaust saved their owners’ lives.  Each sounds its own story.  Gustav Mahler’s niece\, Alma Rosé\, was the conductor of the orchestra at Auschwitz\, making this performance of Mahler’s Fourth Symphony\, on these very instruments\, achingly poignant. \n\nSteve Martland: Crossing the Border \nVivaldi: Concerto for Three Violins in F Major\, RV551 \nMahler: Symphony No. 4 in G Major\, Elena Galván\, soloist \n\nBUY TICKETS

SUMMARY:The City Without Jews Cine-Concert at the JCC San Francisco
DESCRIPTION:Alicia Svigals\n(Photo: Thierry Arsenault)\nSilent film with live original music by klezmer fiddler Alicia Svigals and pianist Donald Sosin.\nThe City Without Jews is one of few surviving Austrian Expressionist films\, and the magnum opus of the great director H.K. Breslauer. Filmed in 1924\, it can be seen as a chilling premonition of the Holocaust—the premise is the political rise of the Christian Social Party\, which orders all Jews to evacuate Austria. In the ensuing months\, the sober reality of a society without Jews sets in\, as cultural institutions close and cafes are replaced with beer halls. Eventually\, the economy declines and unemployment runs rampant. Based on the dystopian book by Hugo Bettauer and intended originally as political satire\, it became the subject of controversy and censorship\, especially in conjunction with the rise of Nazism. Featuring an original live score by violinist Alicia Svigals and pianist Donald Sosin\, including a performance by Svigals on one of the instruments from the Violins of Hope collection. \nThe silent film is 91 minutes with English intertitles. \nFollowing the screening\, in the Atrium\, violin-maker and restorer of the Violins of Hope Avshalom Weinstein will be available to answer questions\, and will have three instruments from the collection on display.   \nGeneral Admission  $20\nMembers get 10% off \nTickets
